Entry licensing bodies
The entry licensing bodies for bones and ashes to Vietnam are the Vietnamese diplomatic missions in the countries where the bones or ashes are located. If there is no Vietnamese diplomatic mission in the country, the applicant can submit the application to the Vietnamese diplomatic mission in the nearest country.
Bones
To bring bones to Vietnam, the applicant must submit the following documents to the Vietnamese diplomatic mission:
- Application for a permit to transport human remains to Vietnam (Form M02.LS-DH)
- Permission from the People’s Committee at Provincial level in Vietnam where the body/remains will be transported for burial
- Photocopy of Death Certificate
- Photocopy of Passport or Green Card of the late
- Photocopy of the Permit for Transit of Human Remains issued by the local (State/County) Department of Health
- Self-addressed postage-paid return envelope
Ashes
To bring ashes to Vietnam, the applicant must submit the following documents to the Vietnamese diplomatic mission:
- Application for a permit to transport human ashes to Vietnam (Form M03.LS-DH)
- Permission from the People’s Committee at sub-district level in Vietnam where ashes will be transported to (Form M04.LS-DH)
- Photocopy of Death Certificate and the Certificate of Cremation
- Photocopy of Passport or Green Card of the late
- Self-addressed postage-paid return envelope
Procedure
Once the applicant has submitted all the required documents, the Vietnamese diplomatic mission will review the application and issue a permit if all the requirements are met. The permit is valid for six months from the date of issue.
Transportation
The bones or ashes must be transported in a sealed container that is properly labeled. The container must also be accompanied by the permit issued by the Vietnamese diplomatic mission.
Arrival in Vietnam
Upon arrival in Vietnam, the bones or ashes must be presented to the customs authorities at the port of entry. The customs authorities will verify the permit and inspect the container. Once the inspection is complete, the bones or ashes will be released to the applicant.
